Why Glyphosate-Free Hummus Matters

As a proud non-GMO hummus brand, we take a lot of pride in providing a glyphosate-free hummus option for our customers. But why does this matter?

Glyphosate is a super common herbicide used in conventional farming. It has been the subject of much concern over the last few years in the US due to its potential health risks.

In 2020, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) published a study that showed alarming levels of glyphosate in popular hummus and chickpeas brands.

The EWG's independent tests found that nearly 90% of non-organic chickpea and hummus samples contained detectable levels of glyphosate, with some samples exceeding even the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) already permissive standards.

For consumers who prioritize health - and who love hummus - this is pretty concerning.

And we're not trying to be alarmist here, but we do think that knowledge is power, as Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, has been classified as a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Despite its widespread use in conventional farming, the presence of glyphosate in everyday foods like hummus is something we should all be aware of.

We believe hummus should be as pure, natural and tasty as possible - and made with lots of tahini 😋

In our hummus kit we use Kabuli (Bulgarian) chickpeas, which are the best for making hummus. These smaller, sweeter, and softer chickpeas are traditionally used in Mediterranean hummus recipes, creating a smoother and richer flavor.

Our chickpeas are also glyphosate-free, grown and processed in a way that resembles traditional soaking and pressure cooking methods, ensuring a fresher and more wholesome taste.

And of course, tahini is the heart and soul of any great hummus. Our tahini is stone-ground and slow-roasted, made from the highest quality sesame seeds to create a smooth, rich, and nutty flavor that takes the hummus to a whole new level.
